Shaul Shenhav: The Stories of Israel

4/3/17, 7:30 PM

About this event

In the recent decades, the concept of narrative has gained relevance in a variety of fields and disciplines, giving rise to what scholars usually term “the narrative turn” in research. As has been widely acknowledged narrative plays an important role in the understanding of the political arena in Israel. “The stories of Israel” is based on a series of studies Professor Shenhav has conducted on the storytelling strategies employed by the Israeli leadership and the national stories embraced by Israelis. Among the questions that will be addressed in the lecture are: What stories come to people’s minds when thinking about the State of Israel or its people? Who do Israelis regard as the main national protagonists? And what can we learn from the way a person tells a story about his or her projected political behavior.

Shaul Shenhav is an associate professor at the Department of Political Science, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research interests include political narratives, political discourse, rhetoric, public diplomacy, and Israeli politics.
