Ivory Tower Literary Magazine 2017 Launch

4/26/17, 6:00 PM

About this event

The University of Minnesota's undergraduate literary arts magazine presents the 2017 issue! Join staff, contributors, alumni, and friends in celebrating this year's outstanding fiction, poetry, essay, and visual art--as well as the history of Ivory Tower as a publishing training ground and creative launch pad for undergraduates at the U. Special guests include such magazine alums as poet Jim Moore and editors Jamie Millard and Meghan Murphy. Readings, music, and refreshments. Free and open to the public; no tickets necessary.

Ivory Tower gives the best undergraduate writers and visual artists at the U a chance to publish their work. Submissions are blind and collected at the end of fall semester. The magazine is produced by students enrolled in the two-semester English department series EngL 3711 Literary Magazine Production Lab I (fall) and EngL 3712 Literary Magazine Production Lab II (spring). Students handle everything from securing funding to reviewing submissions and from designing the website to contracting with a printer.

Ivory Tower has been in existence, with various gaps in publication and switches in sponsor, since 1952. Alumni of Ivory Tower include former editor Garrison Keillor, former associate editor Patricia Hampl, former associate editor Jim Moore, and former co-editor and managing editor, respectively, Meghan Murphy and Jamie Millard, now co-executive directors of Pollen. Staff members of Ivory Tower continue to advance into careers in publishing, editing, and writing.

Sponsored by Ivory Tower, the Department of English through its SEE Budget (Supplies, Equipment, and other Expenses), and the Weisman Art  Museum.
