First Books Reading with Creative Writing MFA Alumni

3/9/17, 7:00 PM

About this event

The authors of debut fiction and poetry books read and speak about the experience of getting published. This year the University of Minnesota Creative Writing Program welcomes MFA alums Kathleen Glasgow, author of the New York Times young adult fiction bestseller Girl in Pieces (Delacorte), Andria Williams, author of the novel The Longest Night (Random House), and Ryo Yamaguchi, author of the poetry collection The Refusal of Suitors (Noemi Press). Presented by Creative Writing, the Weisman Art Museum, and the Department of English.

Free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations necessary.

Glasgow's novel, which spent almost two months in the top ten of the New York Times young adult hardcover fiction bestseller list, was selected as a New York Public Library Best Book for Teens 2016 and an Amazon Best Books of the Year 2016: Young Adult. "In Glasgow’s riveting debut novel," raved Booklist, "readers are pulled close to Charlie’s raw, authentic emotions as she strains to make a jagged path through her new life. Love and trust prove difficult, and Charlie’s judgment is not well honed, but her will to survive is glorious."

Entertainment Weekly called Williams' novel “a stunning debut," and the San Francisco Chronicle described it as "a smart and detailed portrait of a dissolving postwar marriage." The book was Amazon's Debut Novel of the Month for January 2016.

"Eccentric, exciting, and unimaginably original poems that are emotionally and intellectually satisfying, exquisitely composed, and memorable," noted NewPages of Yamaguchi's work. "They combine a sense of personal engagement, lyric elegance, and contemporary energy."
