Student collaborators re-examine Sophie Treadwell’s 1920’s jazz-age play Machinal, to uncover its complicated questions and create their own responses. Machinal 2018: Rage Against the Machine hopes not to simply "modernize" the setting, but probe at our society through the lens of gender, race, and class. Informed by the spirit of jazz, part expressionistic and part surrealist, the ensemble will evolve movement, gesture, and dance into a contemporary mash-up to interrogate how domestic politics, industrialization, and disenfranchisement result in brutal human fallout. The production is directed by theatre arts faculty member Talvin Wilks.
