On Purpose: Portrait of the Liberal Arts

9/12/18, 11:00 AM

About this event

Exhibition will run September 12 - December 8, 2018
The University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts (CLA) kicks off its year-long 150th anniversary celebration with the opening of “On Purpose: Portrait of the Liberal Arts,” an exhibition comprised of 60 new, life-size color portraits communicating the importance of the liberal arts in society

Photographed by Xavier Tavera, whose work has been shown internationally, the gallery includes photographs representing each of the 31 departments in the CLA. The photographs capture the essence of the liberal arts and examine our purpose. We are students and scholars. Entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and leaders. We unravel the difficult challenges facing modern societies and educate imaginative minds who create tomorrow’s industry-shaping ideas. We train compassionate graduates who lead healthy dialogues.

Opening Reception
Thursday, September 13
Artist Talk with Xavier Tavera at 5:30pm | Reception with refreshments, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

About Xavier Tavera
After moving from Mexico City to the United States, Xavier Tavera learned what it felt like to be part of a subculture - the immigrant community. Subjected to alienation has transformed the focus of his photographs to share the lives of those who are marginalized. Tavera has shown his work extensively in the Twin Cities, nationally and internationally. His work is part of the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Plaines Art Museum, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Minnesota History Center and the Weisman Art Museum.
