Mandarin Program Administrators Conference
3/24/17, 9:00 AM
About this event
About the Conference: The Mandarin Program Administrators Conference offers insight into the world of K-12 Mandarin Chinese language program administration for educators interested in starting or developing Mandarin language programs at the school or district level. Confucius Institute and Minnesota Department of Education staff will be on hand to offer support for existing Chinese language programs and those interested in implementing new programs in Minnesota.
This year's conference will feature guest speaker Mr. Michael Bacon, Assistant Director of Dual Language at Portland Public Schools. His presentation is "Language Immersion: Research Findings and Equity in Action."
Keynote description: In collaboration with the Rand Corporation and American Councils, Portland Public Schools (PPS) completed a four year federally funded research study on the "Effect of Immersion Education on Academic Achievement". This ground breaking immersion research field factored out selection bias, a common problem with making a true comparison of outcomes for students in immersion and those not. Conference attendees will learn about the key research findings and, equally important, how these findings led PPS to plan and implement actions to bring more equitable practices in its immersion programs.
About the Speaker: Michael Bacon works as the Portland Public Schools (PPS) Department of Dual Language Assistant Director overseeing program, professional and curriculum development for 15 immersion programs in Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, and Vietnamese. Read more here!
