A Freeman Seminar: Ragui Assaad on Youth Employment Challenges in the Middle East and North Africa
Tuesday, February 19, 2019

12:45–2 p.m.
Room 184, Humphrey School
Free to attend; no registration required.

Despite rising educational attainment, youth in the Middle East and North Africa have been experiencing increasingly protracted and difficult transitions from school to work. The declining role of the state in the economy and the anemic growth of modern private sectors in the region has led to extended periods of unemployment at labor market entry and a considerable increase in informalization and job precariousness. Moreover, good jobs are increasingly allocated on the basis of social class background. These developments have undoubtedly been an important contributing factor to the Arab Spring uprisings and the political unrest that followed.

Ragui Assaad, professor at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, researches labor policy and labor market analysis in developing countries with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa.

Presented by the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy
