Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies Presents

Postcards from Auschwitz: Tourism and Holocaust Remembrance

11/8/18, 4:00 PM

About this event

Daniel Reynolds is Seth Richards Professor in Modern Languages at Grinnell College, where he has taught since 1998 in the German Department. His book, Postcards from Auschwitz (NYU Press, 2018), explores the relationship between tourism and Holocaust remembrance, a topic he has been researching for the past 10 years. In it he looks at the ways museums and memorials to the Shoah have evolved over the past 70 years in Poland, Germany, Israel, and the United States, and how modern tourism brings its own challenges, but also opportunities, to Holocaust remembrance. His other research interests include German literature and culture from the late19th century to the present, with special emphasis on the Weimar Republic, East Germany, the history and culture of Berlin, and German colonialism and the genocide of the Nama and Herero people in today's Namibia, a former German colony.

Co-sponsored by the Center for German and European Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies, the Institute for Advanced Study, the Department of History, and the Department of German, Nordic, Slavic, and Dutch.

This event will be held in the Wilson Research Collaboration Studio.
