Center for Jewish Studies Presents

Andrei Corbea-Hoisie Presents: "The Jews of Czernowitz in the 19th Century"

10/10/17, 11:45 AM

About this event

This lecture will explore the unusual development of Czernowitz's Jews in the 19th century, examining the existent sources to document Jewish life in the context of the unique socio-political constellation of the Habsburg Crownland of the Bukowina. At the very center of the lecture will be an exploration of the confrontation between those Jews who chose to follow traditional Jewish customs and those who chose the alternative path of assimilation and acculturation to German culture. I will reflect on the complexity of a German Jewish cultural symbiosis as it is illustrated tragically in the history of the 20th century.
