First Books: Maureen Aitken, Caitlin Bailey, Donte Collins Plus Reading of Michelle McNamara

3/14/19, 7:00 PM

About this event

The Creative Writing Program presents its annual reading with debut authors! Hear writers Maureen Aitken, Caitlin Bailey, and Donte Collins read from and discuss their first books. In addition, Connor McNamara Stratton will read from the late Michelle McNamara's true crime bestseller I'll Be Gone in the Dark, the 2018 debut by the Creative Writing Program alum. (Stratton is her nephew and also an MFA alum.)

MFA alumna Maureen Aitken published The Patron Saint of Lost Girls in 2018 with Southeast Missouri State University Press. She is the recipient of the Nilsen Prize. She has also won the Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Initiative Grant, the Loft Mentor Award, and a grant from the SASE/Jerome Foundation.

Caitlin Bailey is the author of Solve for Desire (Milkweed Editions), a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award and winner of the 2017 Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry. A UMN grad with an English minor, she also received the Loft Mentor Award.

Donte Collins is the author of the 2017 poetry collection Autopsy (Button Poetry), a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award. Named the inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of Saint Paul, Minnesota, they are the recipient of the 2018 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Spoken Word and the 2016 Most Promising Young Poet Award from the Academy of American Poets.

Alum Michelle McNamara is the author of I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. She had nearly completed the book for HarperCollins when she died; her widower Patton Oswalt and Paul Haynes updated it for publication. HBO will adapt the bestseller.

Presented by the Edelstein-Keller Visiting Writer Series. Free; no tickets or reservations necessary. For disabilities accommodations and information about the venue, email Terri Sutton at sutt0063@umn.edu or call 612-626-1528.
