Center for Sustainable Building Research Presents

Center for Sustainable Building Research Training (Session 2): Reduction of Plug Loads

10/13/17, 12:30 PM

About this event

The CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING RESEARCH is offering an educational training series during Fall 2017. The educational sessions are 1) Understanding the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as a part of the B3 process, 2) Design with Plug Loads and 3) Creating high efficiency building with little or no cost using Accelerated Performance.

The second session, ADVANCING THE LAST FRONTIER: REDUCTION OF BUILDING PLUG LOADS, will be taught by:
  • Rick Carter, FAIA, LEED Fellow, Integrative Design Team Leader, LHB, Inc.
  • Chris Plum, Program Development Manager, Center for Energy and Environment
  • Lester Shen, Director of Innovative Technologies, Center for Energy and Environment

Course number B32017-F2 is $100/person and is eligible for 4 AIA LU HSW. A full series description and registration can be found HERE.

Session description
Plug load energy is used by everything from computers to water coolers to small, embedded data centers and represents a relatively untapped energy savings resource in new and existing buildings. These loads, defined as all electric end uses that are not HVAC, lighting, or domestic hot water, are increasing. With plug load use rising, it can mean 20 kBtu/SF/year (50%) or greater of that target EUI is consumed by these loads, making it increasingly difficult to meet performance goals. To achieve SB 2030 energy targets and optimize energy efficiency, building owners, tenants, office operators, and their design teams must better understand plug loads and strategies for reduction.

In this session, principal investigators of these projects will explain how the results demonstrate that reducing plug loads is critical to achieving improved building energy performance and EUI targets.
