Department of Philosophy Presents

"Kant's Argument that Attractive Force is Essential to Matter" Katherine Dunlop, UT-Austin

10/19/18, 3:30 PM

About this event

Katherine Dunlop, UT-Austin will be giving a talk.
CSOM:  1-136
Abstract:  I argue that when Kant maintains (in the _Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science_) that attractive force is essential to matter, he is addressing a controversy regarding Newton's theory of gravitation, rather than assigning a traditional metaphysical role to attractive force. The reading I defend is inspired by that of Michael Friedman, but differs from his regarding the argument's role in the book's overall project.
