Medieval Icelanders on the Best Vernacular

Abstract: Between c. 1150 and 1350, Icelandic intellectuals engaged in discussions about proper spelling of the vernacular, the use of runes versus Latin script, and the merits of Icelandic versus Latin as a grammatical and rhetorical language. This talk gives an overview of the various phases in this debate.
