Sociology Workshop: Ph.D. Candidate Jack Delehanty

10/23/17, 2:30 PM

About this event

Join us on October 23 for the Sociology Workshop Series featuring Ph.D. Candidate Jack Delehanty. Mr. Delehanty will present "Religious Activism and the Cultural Complexities of Progressive Politics”. Please see abstract below.

Composed of multiracial, multi-class, and multi-faith constituencies, and pursuing broad social reform projects that span many issue areas, faith-based community organizations (FBCOs) are ideal venues in which to study whether and how institutions can combat the race and class divides that splinter American democracy. Drawing on 30 months of ethnographic fieldwork and 31 interviews, I analyze FBCOs’ efforts to foment solidarity across social difference and to bring constituencies with different short-term economic and political priorities to act together in pursuit of shared long-term cultural goals.
