Building the City on the City: A Sustainable Way of Spatial Growth through Brownfield Redevelopment

2:30-3:30 pm April 26, 2017
Humphrey Forum, Humphrey School of Public Affairs,

Urban expansion is an inevitable trend during the process of urbanization. However, unlimited urban expansion would bring about high costs in many aspects, such as the decrease of farmlands, degradation of environment, imbalance between urban and rural areas, and inconvenience of urban life, etc. Currently, when promoting the sustainable development of Chinese cities, China's policy of New Urbanization calls for new spatial growth mode among Chinese cities. This makes brownfield redevelopment significant. Starting with an analysis on the emergence of brownfield issue in developed countries along with the economic restructuring in the 1970s, this lecture introduces the successful experience of brownfield redevelopment in Ruhr Region and Paris, at regional and city levels respectively, as well as the practice of Beijing since the 1990s, and analyzes the challenges that urban planning and design is facing when dealing with brownfield redevelopment.

Dr. Jian LIU is Associate Professor of Urban Planning & Design at Tsinghua University, Managing Chief-Editor of China City Planning Review, and 2016 Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Graduate School of Design Harvard University. Her research focuses on urban and rural planning, urban regeneration, planning institution, and international comparison.

This presentation is conducted through the Fulbright Scholar Program’s Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF).
