President Kaler and the Board of Regents will award an honorary degree to long-time faculty member
Professor Thomas Sargent.

Together with Christopher Sims, another former University of Minnesota economics professor, Professor Sargent received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

“Their empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy,” cited by the Nobel committee, was largely done while they were faculty members here in the Department of Economics.
