Fireside Sippers: Warming Beers for Fall and Winter

This two-session short course is offered by the College of Continuing Education's LearningLife program.


Autumn is an in-between time. There's a chill in the air, but it's not yet brutally cold. The leaves are changing color and beginning to fall, but the trees are not the gray skeletons they'll become in winter. It's time to put away the barbeque and break out the fire pit. It's also time for a beer.
Typically thought of as a summer-day libation, what makes beer appropriate for fall? Well, slightly higher alcohol for one thing—just enough to take the edge off the cool air. A little color would be welcome: amber, red, orange, and brown to match the seasonal hues. A bit of spice is always nice, and perhaps a wink and a nod to the fall harvest, be it of hops or pumpkins.

And then comes winter, when the air's brutal bite and early darkness drive most people indoors to curl up next to a crackling hearth. Now it's time for snifter beers, malty old ales, Barleywines, and big imperial stouts. These are beers to savor slowly throughout the evening, as they warm you from within.

No doubt, fall and winter are great seasons for beer and in this course certified cicerone Michael Agnew will take you through the best these seasons have to offer. From brazenly bitter fresh hop beers and soothingly sweet English Barleywines to apple and pumpkin beers and spicy holiday ales, you'll learn the histories of the styles and how they're made.

A $20 fee, payable to the instructor at the first class, will cover the cost of beer for both sessions.

Michael Agnew is Minnesota's first certified cicerone and the founder of A Perfect Pint, which offers beer tastings and educational experiences for private and corporate events. He is a national judge for the Beer Judge Certification Program, a restaurant consultant, and a teacher at the Cooks of Crocus Hill.
