The University of Minnesota School of Music presents BALKANICUS - the Seventh Annual Concert of Balkan Contemporary Chamber Music
This is the seventh concert in a series created in 2003 by the Bulgarian cellist Nickolai Kolarov to showcase new music from the Balkans. The concert features some of the best musicians in the area such as Philip Zawisza (bass-baritone), John De Haan (tenor), Fernando Meza (percussion), Nickolai Kolarov (cello), Patrick O'Keefe (clarinet), and Jill Dawe (piano).
At the concert, you will enjoy new chamber music from Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. The Bulgarian composers Alexander Tekeliev and Dimitar Tapkov and the Turkish Mehmet Okonsar will be presented for the first time, together with authors featured at previous Balkanicus concerts - Dorian Cene from Albania, Sorin Lerescu from Romani,a and the Bulgarians Vasil Kazandjiev and Ivan Spassov.
All of the pieces are American premieres of compositions by composers of different generations, styles, and musical language but all united by "spiritus balkanicus."
This concert is made possible, in part, with funds provided by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature.
