BALKANICUS—the Eighth Annual Concert of Balkan Contemporary Chamber Music
All American Premieres.
World Premieres of works by Aris Carastathis and Vassil Kazandjiev
The Balkanicus chamber concert series was created in 2003 by the Bulgarian cellist Nickolai Kolarov to showcase new music from the Balkans and accordingly all of the pieces in this eighth concert are American premieres. Two world premieres are also on the program—“Fantasy concertante” (2011) written specially for the Balkanicus ensemble by the Bulgarian Vassil Kazandjiev; and “River” (2010) by the Greek Aris Carastathis who will come from Canada for his premiere. The concert will take the listeners to Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greek and Serbia through new and diverse chamber music works from composers of different generations and styles; yet all united by 'spiritus balkanicus'.
The concert will feature Fernando Meza (percussion), Caroline Lemen (horn), Nickolai Kolarov (cello), Alastair Brown (violin), Jill Dawe (piano), Catherine Ramirez (flute), and students from the U of M School of Music.
Refreshments will follow.
