Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: U of M Bookstore Coffman Memorial Union
Stephen Jimenez, award-winning journalist and author, will discuss his book The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths about the Murder of Matthew Shepard on Tuesday, November 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave. S.E. Minneapolis.
In painstaking detail, The Book of Matt unravels the true story of Matthew Shepard’s murder—a murder that was ultimately about drugs and money—not a gay hate crime. Based on extensive research and countless interviews The Book of Matt draws clear connections between the meth epidemic that began to simultaneously ravage rural American communities and urban gay enclaves in the late 1990’s. Jimenez shows how it was the media and special interests that decided a hate crime had occurred, not a court of law. Although much good has come from this tragedy—including National Hate Crime legislation, the real tragedy defies the politically correct mythology that’s been created. Ultimately, The Book of Matt is a richly detailed chronicle of one reporter’s determination to uncover the truth despite the consequences.
Jimenez will sign copies of his book following the discussion. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, or to order a signed copy visit www.bookstore.umn.edu/genref/authors.html.
