Joel Pickford, author and award-winning photographer, will discuss his book Soul Calling: A Photographic Journey through the Hmong Diaspora on Monday, November 5 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave. S.E. Minneapolis.
Soul Calling is the first photographic book on the Hmong culture ever published. Pickford presents a literary pairing of creative nonfiction writing and documentary photography to explore cultures and communities of Hmong immigrants and Hmong Americans living in Fresno, California, as well as the way of life of Hmong villagers in Laos. Soul Calling provides a captivating outside point of view inside the world of a vibrant but little-known people. It probes the very nature of observation and the problems presented when one culture seeks to understand another.
Pickford will sign copies of his book following the discussion. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, or to order a signed copy visit www.bookstore.umn.edu/genref/authors.html.
