Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Ted Mann Concert Hall
Please join us for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute on Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Ted Mann Concert Hall. This year's event will feature the musical stylings of Oleta Adams as well as performances by the Walker West Music Academy and University of Minnesota alumnus Ahmad Lewis. Oleta’s 1990 debut album, Circle of One, went platinum, and over the years she has toured with Tears for Fears, Phil Collins, Michael Bolton and Luther Vandross. Her music draws deeply from her roots in gospel, while crossing effortlessly into the realms of soul, R&B, urban and popular music. She’s received four Grammy nominations and sold more than two and a half million records.
When the University of Minnesota's Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute began in the early 1980s, it was the only event of its kind in Minnesota. The late Reginald Buckner, a professor in the School of Music—and an accomplished performer, composer, and educator—founded the concert and began a tradition of celebrating the life and accomplishments of Rev. Dr. King through the performing arts. Professor Buckner's death in 1989 left the University with an inspiring legacy.
The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute is now a joint program of the University of Minnesota’s Office for Equity and Diversity and the School of Music. It is one of the University's signature diversity events and remains free and open to the public.
